How did December 25 become Christmas?
The church in Rome began formally celebrating Christmas on December 25 in 336, during the reign of the emperor Constantine. As Constantine had made Christianity the effective religion of the empire, some have speculated that choosing this date had the political motive of weakening the established pagan celebrations.
Who invented Christmas Day?
In fact, the Christian celebration of Christmas was invented by Romans as a way to co-opt and tame the raucous pagan holiday of Saturnalia, which was itself essentially a celebration of the days getting longer after the winter solstice.
Why is Christmas 24?
First of all, nobody knows on what day Jesus was born. It's by convention that we say that Jesus was born on the 25th. Secondly, Scandinavian countries (actually all Nordic countries) do celebrate Christmas on the 25th as well. The 24th is celebrated as “Julafton”, meaning “Yule evening”; that is, Christmas Eve.
Why is the day called Christmas?
Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died and then came back to life.
